Women are more likely than men to experience economic hardships and
poverty after a divorce, a phenomenon that sociologists refer to as the
feminization of poverty. With less money in the household, difficult economic
choices oftentimes need to be made.

In addition to the increase in rates of poverty, sociologists have also examined the effects of divorce on children.
