Construction Estimating and Bidding
Prepare a cost estimate for the metal components of the building.
- You are to takeoff all beams and joists. Add 10% to your total for connections.
The two main items are I-beams and open web steel joists (metal joists, bar joists). Both are taken off in terms of tons. For the I-beams use the following unit costs:

For the bar joists, you will need to first determine what type of joists are specified and then use a manufacturer’s guide to determine the pounds per foot for each type. Use the following unit cost for the specified joists:
