Students will review and write a 5-7 page paper detailing the scope of practice for school counselors in their respective states. Students must complete the following:
a. Review the American School Counseling Association (www.schoolcounseling.org), state school counseling association (e.g., The California Association of School Counselors http://www.schoolcounselor-ca.org/), and local credentialing agency requirements to become a school counselor (e.g., California Commission on Teacher Credentialing (https://www.ctc.ca.gov).
b. Describe how the scope of practice in your state addresses working with stakeholders within a school (school administration, teachers, staff), school district (district administration), and community.
c. Examine the American School Counselor Association (ASCA) Ethical Standards for School Counseling, Section B. RESPONSIBILITIES TO PARENTS/GUARDIANS, SCHOOL AND SELF: B.3.1.i Responsibilities to Self. Explain how this code relative to your cultural competence affects your counseling style when working with counselees from diverse populations.
d. As school counselors may work collaboratively with clinical mental health counselors in a school setting, discuss how scope of practice could impact school counselors’ ability to provide social- emotional counseling services to counselees.(provide emotional support )
e. Discuss your thoughts on how ethical conduct of school counselors could be affected by scope of practice.
