Reflecting & Moving Forward: Becoming Advocates for the Field of Education
Directions: As is the tradition of this course at the close of the semester, we need to look at what’s currently happening in the field of education. Then, we need to contemplate how current news stories directly and indirectly connect to what we’ve explored across the semester within our course, Teaching in Today’s Society.
(1)Read/watch each text, list a minimum of 2 connections that you see between each text and our course. What topics emerge within the texts that we have also explored in some way? Discuss your findings.
“What to Say to Kids on November 10 and the Days After” by Maureen Costello, Director of Teaching Tolerance
“What Do We Tell the Children?” by Dr. Ali Mitchell of the Huffington Post (http://www.huffingtonpost.com/entry/what-should-we-tell-the-children_us_5822aa90e4b0334571e0a30b).
“School Administrators: Are You Ready?” by Maureen Costello, Director of Teaching Tolerance (http://www.tolerance.org/blog/school-administrators-are-you-ready).
Your choice. So that multiple perspectives are sought and represented, find a current news story about an educational issue and list at least 2 connections between it and our course. Topics may include but are not limited to: Government policies and spending; School reform; Health and child development; Education and the curriculum, Technology and Education, etc.
